Half an hour later, Bojan was once again standing in the observation lounge with the rest of the team. He never thought of them as âhisâ team, even though Dayrit often referred to the S.C.E. contingent on the Musgrave as âyour guysâ to Bojan. But generally, he was happy to delegate most of the leadership tasks to TâEama.
The only difference between this meeting and yesterdayâs was the added presence of the shipâs security chief, Lieutenant Brian Cormack.
âWe have two problems,â Bojan said without preamble, once everyone had taken their seats. âIâve completed a full scan of the Maxia Zeta starâand farantine is nowhere to be found.â
âSo what?â Ysalda asked. âJust because an element isnât in a star doesnât mean it canât be on a planet.â
âYes, but I was concerned when I learned that, so I scanned Maxia Zeta III.â
Ysalda was still questioning him. âWhat for?â
TâEama raised an eyebrow and answered before Bojan could. âCurrent theory holds that the third and fourth planets in this system were once one world, but suffered a cataclysm that split them in two.â
âAnd before you ask,â Bojan said quickly, âwe canât construct a mine on the third planet as itâs too unstable. The place is riddled with earthquakes and the like.â Waving his hand back and forth, he went on. âIn any case, that does not matter so much as what the scan turned up: no farantine on the third planet.â
âAnd again,â Ysalda said, âI ask, so what? We didnât find the farantine on the fourth planet, either.â
âThat is not quite the case. The last mineralogical survey was done twenty years ago.â
Fabian nodded. âSensors are a lot better nowâespecially on an S.C.E. ship.â
âExactly,â Bojan said. âWhen we did our standard planetary scan upon entering orbit, we not only found the farantine that the mine uncovered, but a goodly portion that was still buried besides.â
âIâm sorry,â Mrodile said, rubbing his ridge, âI donât understand whatââ
âIf thereâs no farantine on the third planet,â Fabian said, âit means that the farantine on the fourth planet isnât naturalâit was put there on purpose.â
The anthropologistâs blue face became slightly pale. âOh.â
Bojan blew out a breath. ââOhâ is right. This has gone from a terrible accident to an act of sabotage.â
âThat changes everything, doesnât it?â Brian said. âIâm assuming thatâs why the captain put us on yellow alert?â The security chiefâs Liverpool accent got thicker, as it often did when things got interesting.
âActually,â TâEama said, âit changes very little. Our mission remains the same regardless of the source of the farantine, to wit, we must get rid of it.â
Fabian said, âYeah, but what if whoever put it there is still around? They might get a little peevish when we take their sabotage away.â
âAssuming we even can,â Jira said in her usual harried tone. âNothing weâve tried is working.â
âDonât be so sure,â Fabian said with a smile.
Ysalda stared at him. âYouâre not still on that paint notion, are you?â
âIt worked in the labâwhich is more than I can say for any of your bright ideas.
